Emmanuel College Year 11 Health Class Visits

Intergenerational Learning is when people of all ages can learn together and from each other as a way to gain important life skills, values and knowledge.  A wonderful example of this came about recently when the elders of the KT Swinton and Riverside Hostels hosted a group of Year 11 Emmanuel College students for an afternoon.  As part of the students’ health curriculum, they were interested in gaining a deeper understanding of later stage adulthood, in particular physical, social, emotional and intellectual development.  

Over the two sessions a total of 35 students interviewed two willing groups of residents. Outcomes of these sessions were well outside expectation, with noted attitudinal changes shown from both generations.  The elders commented on how strong assumptions they had previously held about the ‘youth of today’ regarding their lack of manners and respect for seniors, had been challenged by the exemplary conduct of the Emmanuel College students.   

Just as wonderful to hear were the students’ comments on how much they had learnt, and how enjoyable it had been to visit.  Two students in particular were rather anxious about entering the care environment and by the end of their session asked if they could come back in their ‘own time’ for future visits!

Visions for Australia Day

Lyndoch Living lifestyle staff led our residents and clients in activities with primary school students from Allansford PS, Merrivale PS and King's College.

Participants discussed what it means to be Australian and identified what we do and say that makes Australians not only unique, but great. Through these discussions, the students, residents and clients illustrated their thoughts on the back of a series of Australian flags that were later sewn together to make long stands of bunting.

A traditional Aussie barbecue was organised all to look over the finished product and reunite with new found friends.
