Lyndoch Living’s Apprentice Chef Mitch is learning real industry skills

Meet Lyndoch Living’s first-year Apprentice Chef, Mitch.

With a passion for hospitality, travel and tourism, after leaving secondary school, Mitch moved to Melbourne to complete a Certificate III in Aviation to work as part of the cabin crew. He said this was a great experience as they trained in simulators and travelled to New Zealand.

Mitch continued to build on his skills by gaining experience as an apprentice baker and working front-of-house in the hospitality industry.

“Learning on the job and gaining experience in different industries assists in building your skill-set and employability,” he said.

His previous experience and caring, empathic, and driven nature made it a natural transition for him into aged care.

“I was familiar and comfortable with the environment as I used to visit a family member who resided here. So, when the opportunity to work at Lyndoch and study my Certificate III in Commerical Cookery through WestVic Staffing Solutions came up, I took it.”

A typical day for Mitch will see him chopping veggies and salads, assisting the chefs in the meal preparation and learning about each resident’s needs.

“It’s important to know who you are cooking for and their needs. You are learning ways to prepare appetising and nutritious food to ensure an enjoyable food experience for the resident.”

“I was gobsmacked by how big the kitchen was and the number of people involved. This role has opened my eyes to what it’s like working in aged care. So give it go – you always have support and be friendly towards others,” Mitch said.

Mitch takes inspiration from cooking shows and loves the patisserie side of cooking, particularly preparing vanilla slices.

Outside of work and study, Mitch competes in open-water swimming, umpires the seniors in WDFNL, and enjoys running and dancing.

Thanks for caring Mitch!
