Meet Ken, who is one of Lyndoch Living’s Village Hub residents.
Ken was born in the sunny town of Mildura and spent his childhood fishing and playing on the banks of the Murray River. After completing school, Ken decided to undertake a plastering apprenticeship. Not long after he moved to Geelong with his family, joined the West Geelong Football Club and got a job at Elders, where he worked for around 15 years.
Ken’s older brother was a car salesman, and the lifestyle started to appeal to Ken. “He always had a nice car and got to wear a suit to work. So I thought I would give it a go,” Ken said. For the next 30 years, this became his career, working for various dealerships and eventually starting up his own business. His career presented him with many opportunities. He was lucky enough to work alongside Geelong Football Club legend Polly Farmer and travelled the world on business trips.
One Easter, Ken was heading back to Mildura to visit his mates. It was then that he asked Sue, whom he had not long met, to join him. She said yes. They eventually married, had one daughter, and have been happily in love ever since.
Ken and Sue were associated with the Warrnambool Racing Club, and one year they came to town for a race meet. Seeing the Boggy Creek pub for sale and looking for an escape to the country, the pair bought the pub. They enjoyed being the local publicans for many years.
They moved into the retirement village six years ago as the convenience of the nursing home appealed to them. Recently, Sue moved across to Lyndoch, and Ken visits her regularly. He also enjoys sitting out on his balcony with an iced cold beer!
