Lyndoch Living resident Margaret shares what growing up in Scotland was like.

  • 0

Lyndoch Living resident Margaret was born in 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland. Margaret was in the middle of a large family, with six brothers and six sisters on either side of her. While Margaret was growing up, her family had a farm. She remembers having crops of potatoes, parsnips, and dairy cows.

One of Margaret’s favourite memories as a child in Scotland was the wintertime. Margaret said that her siblings loved sliding down snow-covered hills using homemade sledges. Sometimes the snow would be so heavy that they would get snowed into their homes. Margaret joked that she loved it when that would happen, as she would get time off school.

When Margaret finished school, she began working as a house cleaner. Then, one night at the local dance, she met James. The pair hit it off instantly and married in 1954. They went on to have two daughters and a son.

Then, in 1963, Margaret, James and their children emigrated from Scotland to Hamilton, Victoria. Margaret said that they were on the boat for a total of three weeks, and she was seasick the entire time.

Once settled in Hamilton, Margaret and James had another daughter. Margaret stayed home and looked after the children, while James went out and managed a cleaning business at the Hamilton Hospital.

Margaret fondly remembers having family holidays in Adelaide. They would take their caravan and enjoy time at the beach together. “It was such a beautiful place,” Margaret said.

In 2019, Margaret moved into Lyndoch Living. Margaret loves to keep busy and enjoys socialising. She also enjoys reading, listening to music, playing cards, and walking.

Thanks for sharing Margaret.
