Lyndoch celebrating diversity this ANZAC Day

  • 0

Lyndoch Living will welcome Peek-Whurrong Elder, Robbie Lowe Senior, to share his knowledge on the experiences of indigenous Australians in the Australian armed forces at the annual Lyndoch ANZAC Day Ceremony tomorrow.

CEO, Doreen Power, said that Lyndoch is honoured to welcome Mr Lowe and that residents, staff and family members are looking forwarding to learning about the lesser known role of our indigenous soldiers.

“At Lyndoch we pride ourselves on making important annual events like ANZAC Day both relevant and interesting for our residents,” Ms Power said.

“In the past we’ve welcomed students from local schools who have embarked on projects detailing the experiences of residents during wartime; we have invited a WWII servicewoman to outline the experiences of women serving in our armed forces; we’ve heard from the mother of a soldier who was actively serving in Afghanistan; we’ve welcomed a Vietnam Veteran; we even one year enjoyed a fascinating account of the varied and important contributions made by animals in times of war.

“It really is a very important day for our residents in particular, a number of whom still don their medals and even their full military uniform for the ceremony,” she said.

Ms Power said every year staff member Jenny Bellamy opens the ceremony in full uniform playing the bagpipes, setting the tone for another moving ceremony.

Lyndoch Board Member, Susan Cassidy, will welcome attendees on behalf of the Executive.

This year’s ANZAC Day is particularly significant, being the centenary of the final campaigns of the First World War.

The Service at Lyndoch Living will be held in the Riverside Activities Room, Wednesday 25th April at 2pm, and will be streamed live on the Lyndoch Living facebook page for residents who are unable to attend the service in person.
