May Noonan Centre by Lyndoch Living resident John was born in 1944 in Northern Ireland. John had one brother and remembers that they would often go riffle shooting out in the fields as teenagers.
When John was 17, he and his family moved to Australia and set up on a dairy farm in Mepunga. John helped his father on the farm until he was 21, then moved to Shepperton, where he managed a cattle stud. The stud consisted of 60 Jersey cows and over 100 Holstein cows.
Before moving back to the Western District, John married and had two daughters. When John returned, he started up his own screen printing business called Option, then went on to work at the Warrnambool and District Bakery as a delivery driver for 21 years. He would get up at 4:00 am and deliver bread across the south-west.
During his work life, John also had a passion for training greyhounds. Over the years, John has trained over 600 winners and travelled across the country for races.
John said, “As a greyhound trainer, you are responsible for exercising, feeding and preparing the dog for racing, so it’s a lot of work, but I enjoyed it.”
Thanks for sharing John.
